Nedbank Cup Last 16: Tough challenge for big clubs.

Pressure amounts for PSL’s cup kings in the Nedbank cup this season after managing to be in the last 16 of the competition.

There’s still a mountain to climb for the big teams; it won’t be an easy ride to the last eight. Non PSL clubs from lower division have always proved to bring a challenge for this competition.

In recent years,  PSL giants have shown to struggle past against the so-called small teams from third and second divisions. To be factual, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs were knocked by the likes of Maluti FC and Baroka  FC in the past years of the competition.

Meanwhile, other NFD teams have also stood their ground to avoid numerous goals during play. Mamelodi Sundowns, who are known to score many goals, only managed to secure a single goal to book their place in the last 16 when they were up against Cape Town All Stars. The PSL log leaders had to wait until the last few minutes of the game to snatch their breakthrough. Stars showed great character and  stability in their 1-0 loss to the Pretoria outfits.

The Nedbank Cup is known for its exciting matches between big teams and small teams. The last 16 draw will be a headache to the Soweto Giants – Kaizer Chiefs who lost three matches from this round  in past seasons coming from lower division sides University of Pretoria, Black leopard, and FC Cape Town.

The cup involves all league division from South Africa. This initiative has been great for the development of south African football giving young teams a chance to play with one of South African big clubs.

The Nedbank has discovered players like Mthokosizi Yende, Andile Jali. The Nedbank Keyona team produced a player like Aubrey Modiba; the full back even won last season competition with Supersport united who were knocked out early this year.

This year last 16 fixture saw Kaizer Chiefs v Stellenbosch, Cape Town City v Orlando Pirates, Royal Eagles v Maritzburg United, AmaZulu v Ubuntu Cape Town, Free State Stars v Chippa United, Mamelodi Sundowns v EC Bees FC, Bloemfontein Celtic v Richards Bay
