With a month of autumn remaining winter’s lingering presence is not only felt but seen as the days have recently become chilly and the darkness/night befalls us sooner than it did before. We can, however, avoid this from being our reality this winter by implementing the following precautions:

• Vaccination

Vaccination is highly recommended as it is the most reliable and effective method of prevention, everyone 6 months old and older can get vaccinated (unless advised otherwise by a health practitioner). Flu vaccines are administered through the injection method and protection lasts throughout the flu season.

• Practice Good Hygiene Habits

We are constantly advised to wash our hands as a means of preventing sickness of every sort, this is also applicable to influenza — the frequent washing of hands with water and soap is very vital in ensuring that germs are not spread. Alternatively one can make use of a hand sanitizer if water and soap are not of close proximity as it serves the same purpose.

We are also advised to, “clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.”

• Avoid Contact

Avoid close contact with people who are sick as influenza spreads by, “airborne respiratory droplets (coughs or sneezes), skin-to-skin contact (handshakes or hugs), saliva (kissing or shared drinks) and touching a contaminated surface (blanket or doorknob).”
