Minister of Environmental affairs, Edna Molewa died at a Pretoria hospital after being admitted on the 8th of September 2018.
Molewa was a member of the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) as well as the ANC Women’s League national working committee.
She was also the first and remains the only female to ever become the provincial chairperson of the ANC and in 1994 she became the first female to be chairperson of the portfolio committee on trade and industry
Before being appointed minister of water and environmental affairs in 2010.
Among other government accolades she served as MEC for social development. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) said on Saturday it was saddened to hear of the death of environmental affairs minister Edna Molewa‚ describing her as a “tireless worker” under whose watch there had been a decline in rhino deaths over the past three years.
President Cyril Ramaphosa sent his condolences on Twitter on the day of her death saying “Our country is in mourning today; we have lost one of our most outstanding daughters, Edna Molewa… She was one of the most outstanding, brightest and hardest working Ministers. This is a great loss to the Congress movement.”
