“NSFAS has received 546 449 applications for the 2019 application cycle. This includes the TVET walk-in applications captured in January 2019”, the department announced.
Approximately 60 000 of the students were unsuccessful. The financial aid faced attacks by students who felt they were wrongly denied the government bursary. A notable number of students flooded the bureau’ social media accounts with complains; largely, the students who were denied the bursary due to their home being said to reach over R122K for returning students and R360K for first time entering students.
Among other issues, The NSFAS DHET’s Circular 6 that instructed institutions not to offer meal allowances to students who are not residing at the institution’s residences caused protests in various universities.
Tshwane University of Technology have since closed and instructed all students to vacate residences while they seek solutions to this matter. UNISA students also complained about not receiving their allowances, however, the NSFAS spokesperson Kagisho Mamabolo announced that 27 774 are confirmed to have received their allowances as in 06 March 2019.
Meanwhile in Durban, DUT engaged on protests this week for allowances. NSFAS have since announced that R247 078 688.97 was advanced to the institution on February 06, 2019 to pay the allowances.
NSFAS made great progress by distributing allowances in the first week of February, which was a milestone for the funding bureau. The #INGENILE hashtag is making rounds on social media from students who got their allowances. Students now receive allowances in form of cash to their preferred bank accounts.
