Ipid investigates death of former Mpumalanga pupil

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the death of a former pupil at Mmametlhake Secondary School in Phelindaba, Mpumalanga.

Derrick Bopape was shot in the leg by police after he threw bricks at windows and attacked police officers in their vehicle two weeks ago. The pupil is now dead.


Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini said:

“Ipid was investigating the discharge of a police firearm in line with its mandate. The investigation will now focus on the death of Bopape.”

The video of Bopape attacking the police vehicle and throwing bricks at the school windows made rounds on social media

The incident on video also shows Bopape being shot by one of the police officers while attacking the police vehicle on the school premises.

The Ipid investigation continues and no arrest has been made.
