VOICES | June; Pride month for LGBT community

This year marks 25 years of freedom and democracy in South Africa yet there are people who still don’t know anything about bisexual people and abuses them because of their sexuality. June is the special month for Lesbian, Gays, Bisexual and Transgender Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) community, it is a 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots. 
According to iol news, the Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the LGBTQIA+ community against a police raid that began in the early morning hours if June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn.
It has since been recognized as a pride month and dedicated to celebrating resilience, perseverance, and Unity of the LGBT community. The LGBT pride stance against discrimination and violence towards the LGBT community. They aim at promoting self -affirmation, dignity, and equality to build and to celebrate sexuality, diversity and gender difference.
“Pride month to me is a month whereby I can fully express my sexuality and also educate other people about LGBTQI community, said Quincy Mahlangu. The LGBT community is embracing this month so that people can learn and stop being violent towards them.
“To me pride month means a recognition of the LGBTQI community, highlighting that we are here, we exist and should be treated with equal rights and not be discriminated against because of who we decide to be with”, said Rodney Bhuda.
He added that It means that people should never be forced to hide in shadows for being their most authentic selves. It honors those that were ostracized from their families and dismissed from their homes. It pays respect to those that have been beaten, brutalized, teased, and most horrifically murdered for being LGBTQI such as Matthew Shepard and Harvey Milk.
