The premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Sihle Zikalala has doubled down on his decision to continue the financial support of King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu. SABC news has reported that of the 6 kings in South Africa, the zulu king’s budget is the highest.
During the premier’s budget speech held in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday, he announced that the royal household has been allocated R66.7 million, an R800 000 increase, for the 2019/2020 financial year.
He noted that, “The office of the premier is the department responsible for the royal household trust. The department will give support to the trust and the fund will be transferred accordingly.”
R19 million has been allocated to the trust, those funds will be responsible for the accommodation of the royal family, and maintenance of the farms. Parties are divided as it is unclear why the royal household is dependent on public funds while they have the means of generating revenue through farming activities.
The premier states the funds will assist the king in various ceremonies and traditional functions of the province. Tax payers can expect to support the royal household for the next 5 years.
