Stats SA Shows A Decline In HIV Rate.

The latest statistics from Stats SA reveal a decline in HIV deaths in the country with the statistics showing approximately 13.8% of South Africans living with the virus.

The Statistician-general, Risenga Maluleke released the mid-year population estimates report of 2019 on Monday, which revealed that an estimated 8 million out of the 58.78 million people in South African are infected with HIV in 2019.

It is believed that due to the country providing more access and uptake of ARVs has led to an improvement in people leading healthier lives. According to charity organization, Avert- South Africa has the biggest antiretroviral treatment programme in the world. In 2018 UNAIDS reported that 4.4 million people were receiving treatment. South Africa has also implemented various HIV prevention programmes such as prevention of mother-to-child transmission and condom use and distribution.

Maluleke mentioned that adults between the ages of 15 and 49 are the most infected with HIV at a 19.07%. He noted that this estimate has decreased considerably due to treatment.
