Deputy Mineral Resources and Energy, Bavelile Hlongwa “died while serving the nation,” said Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The deputy minister died on Friday in an accident along the N1, outside Hammanskraal. Hlongwa was 38. She and three others were also killed by the same truck.
She was returning from an ANC youth league’s event at the University of Limpopo on Friday when she was struck and killed by a truck. The Minerals Council of South Africa says they were still looking at developing a constructive relationship with her.
Alan Fine of the Minerals Council has said, “It came as a real shock to everyone on the Minerals Council and in the industry. We had quite recently met her and were beginning to develop a solid working relationship. It’s a shock for us and very sad for her family, friends, and colleagues.”
Hlongwa died while assisting at another accident scene that happened on the same road. President Cyril Ramaphosa said Hlongwa will be honored with an official funeral.
