Mmusi Maimane Resigns As DA Member And MP

Maimane took to social media to announce his resignation on Thursday morning.

Mmusi Maimane has officially cut ties with the Democratic Alliance (DA) after he resigned from Parliament on Thursday morning.
On Wednesday, He resigned as party leader but indicated he would remain party leader in Parliament until the end of 2019.

But the former DA leader took to social media on Thursday to confirm that he is leaving parliament as well.

“I have worked tirelessly to build the project of One SA for All. It’s been my greatest honour to serve the people of SA and will continue to do so. I have today resigned from the DA and Parliament. Thank you to the people of this country for your faith in our nation. God bless SA,” tweeted Maimane.

The DA’s parliamentary caucus was set to meet at 10am on Thursday to deliberate on Maimane’s future. Chief whip John Steenhuisen is reportedly in poll position to take over as parliamentary leader, with Phumzile van Damme or Natasha Mazzone to then fulfill his position.

Meanwhile, Herman Mashaba resigned as mayor of Johannesburg this week after Zille’s election.
