Minister To Meet Telkom Over Looming Retrenchments

The minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has called an urgent meeting with telecommunications giant Telkom over looming retrenchments.

Telkom plans to retrench 3,000 workers

This follows  after the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said Telkom served them with letters regarding planned retrenchments of 3,000 workers.

In a brief statement, the minister said she has “noted with concern” the developments at Telkom and has “scheduled an urgent meeting” with the company “to be fully briefed on the matter”.

“Further communication will be made in due course,” she said.

The South African government holds a 39% stake in the company.


Job cuts in South Africa

Telkom is the latest organisation in the country  considering job cuts following tough economic conditions and high unemployment.


The planned job Sheddings come in the same week that Massmarr announced  it would close its various stores, including the entire DionWired franchise.
