University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) students who have embarked on a protest on the early hours of Wednesday morning, have burnt their gym.
Provincial police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says close to 120 students took to the streets and burnt mattresses and other belongings.
“This morning at 5am, a group of about 120 students from UKZN Westville campus blockaded a road and also set alight a gymnasium and a case of public violence have been opened.”
“No arrests have been made and no injuries reported, police are at the campus monitoring the protest.” says Gwala.
Students fight with security
University management called on security to control the situation. Unfortunately, the situation led to students clashing with them.
Cause of the protest
It is alleged that the students are angered by the 15% upfront payment requirement towards their historical debt at the university.
