The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni City, Mzwandile Masina said they have made money available to support efforts of national response and will purchase COVID-19 vaccines from Cuba amid opposition.

“Cuba does have medicine to cure Corona virus. Just wait a minute and stop listening to headlines,” he said.

This follows Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize’s speech that there is no vaccine for corona virus and predicted that positive cases of COVID-19 are likely to increase more than 200 on or by Friday.

Mayor Masina also noted that South Africa share good international relation with Cuba and will stand with Cubans in this period of corona virus.

“We are with the Cuban people, those who doubt their capacity are doing so on their own peril. We are not confused policy wise.We stand with the people of Cuba during this corona virus pandemic,” he said.

On Wednesday 18 march, Cuban scientists announced that Cuba has full capacity to supply an anti-viral drug called Interferon Alfa 2B and other 22 medicines to the national health system in the fight and treatment of COVID-19.

The Cuban biotech specialist Dr Luis Herrera Martinez said the Interferon Alfa-2B has proven effective for viruses with characteristics similar to those of COVID-19.

“It’s use prevents aggravation and complications in patients, reaching that stage that can ultimately result in death,” he said.

The Chinese National Health Commission is reported to have also adopted Alfa-2B among other drugs to combat the spread and care of those affected.
