Johannesburg: An Ekurhuleni Metro cop and a security guard have been arrested for an alleged murder of a Vosloorus man on Sunday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said in a media statement on Monday.
The incident took place during the enforcement of the 21-day lockdown regulations where in the SANDF as well as the SAPS are accused by the public for employing heavy-handedness in making sure that citizens abide.
During their patrolling in the area, the metro police officers noticed people who were drinking liquor in a tarven.
Sontaga Seisa, Ipid spokesperson says “The police were enforcing the COVID-19 lockdown regulations. It is alleged that officers tried to effect the arrest, (when) some people together with the community members attacked them.In retaliation the police then discharged the rubber bullets. It is further alleged that the deceased was followed to his home verandah where he was fatally shot.”
Four children aged five, six as well as 11 year-old twins were also injured during the shooting, according to Ipid.
An investigation is ongoing starting from Sunday when the crime scene was revisited by Ipid investigators.
Two male individual were identified and eventually arrested Sunday evening.
An Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Officer, aged 34 and a 45-year-old.
