Johannesburg | Wits University has confirmed on Sunday that a medical student tested positive for the Coronavirus, COVID-19. The case raised concern as the student has attended classes on Monday and Tuesday.
“Wits University has just been informed that the medical student who has been quarantined since last Wednesday has tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19),” Statement from Wits read
The University said the student was asymptomatic and attended classes last Monday and Tuesday, without knowledge that the student had contracted the virus.

The university took some drastic steps amid the reports of the coronavirus cases in the institution’s premises
- Wits University canceled all contact classes for the Graduate Entry Medical Programmer 1 – MBBCH 3, saying they will continue online.
- Students affected to self-quarantine for the next 14 days.
- University’s faculty said they are reaching out to about 350 students who may be affected.
Meanwhile, the university said there will be a meeting this afternoon to announce a way forward.
