The Gauteng Province Premier, David Makhura says the provincial government is deeply concerned by vandalism and arson attacks targeted at public schools.
“The Gauteng Provincial Government is concerned by a spate of vandalism, arson and break-ins at public schools,” he said.
Since the schools closed, 22 public schools have been vandalized or burnt, the latest school to be burnt is Soshanguve Secondary School.
Makhura also added that the provincial government has introduced several initiatives to encourage learners to work independently at home under the supervision of parents during lockdown.
“With the use of digital platforms and broadcast media, government has ensured that learners remain meaningfully engaged during the lockdown period,” he said.
Gauteng Provincial Government also noted that two people have so far been arrested for questioning in connection with school burglaries.
