According to the minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi, only a small fraction of about 103,000 applications have been received by his department from employers of entitled employees.
Nxesi says that over 220,000 employees who are entitled to receive UIF had not yet claimed to date.
The minister has urged employers to assist their employees to claim the government’s COVID-19 Temporary Relief Fund.
The department of labour is making efforts to try and personally contact these employers in order to get them to claim these funds for their employees who have been devastated by coronavirus.
Minister Nxesi says the UIF has increased its capacity to assist claimants during this period.
UIF has 2 million employers on its database which represents over 8 million employees.
Payments are made according to employees’ information as submitted by the employers.
“The reason for this number is because some employers have even dared to help their employees and we continue to appeal to them to help us.” Nxesi said.
