The US President announces that he has halted funding for the World Health Organization (WHO) citing that the organization misled the world and covered up the seriousness of the COVID-19 outbreak in China before it spreads around the world.
“With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have deep concerns whether America’s generosity has been put to the best use possible,” said Trump.
The coronavirus death toll in the United States hits 25,000 after doubling in week and Trump blames the WHO pointing out that it covered the severity of the pandemic in China before it spread around the world.
Trump added that “a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.”
Mr Trump argues that WHO was wrong about travel restrictions, falsely claiming they only lead to “fear and stigma” and also that “there was no human-to-human transmission” a stance the organization later changed.
The US President however has been criticized by some Americans who feel his decision to halt funding is poor especially given the crisis that the world is currently in and that his decision might trigger more COVID-19 cases.
