Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula says a taxi driver was caught using a learners license and car disk that expired in 2018.
“He was caught red-handed with a learners license and car disk that expired in 2018, when police stopped him, he ran away,” he said.
Mbalula adds that the taxi driver was however caught as he couldn’t get away.
“He ran, but couldn’t get away,” said Mbalula.
This came after the Transport Minister issued a statement at the end of Easter holiday where a total number of arrests for violating road traffic laws stood at 719.
Mbalula stated that a total number of 104, 140 vehicles were stopped and checked at 480 roadblocks.
The number of impounded vehicles stood at 236, while 171 were discontinued for unroadworthiness.
This year’s number of arrests for violating road traffic laws shows a sharp decrease compared to 2019 during the same period.
In 2019 1,343 arrests were made for violating road traffic laws at 141 roadblocks. And 1,055 vehicles were impounded while 702 were discontinued for unroadworthiness.
