The Unemployment Insurance Fund has relaxed rules which govern their processes during the nationwide lockdown in order to limit physical contact with clients, confirmed the Department of Labour.
They say that this will allow clients to be paid without mandatory source documents for clients who are already receiving payment benefits from the fund.
At this period of national lockdown, clients will be contacted by SMS in order for them to confirm their unemployment status and banking details.
“This will reduce contact and avoid movement to those clients who are expected to go to labour centres on a monthly basis to sign continuation forms,” says the Department of Labour.
However, new applications for normal UIF benefits such as unemployment (reduced work time), maternity, illness, adoption and parental can be sent either by email or fax to:

Employers who are unable to pay full salaries to their employees due to the national lockdown period can apply for the Covid-19 Temporary Employer-Employee Relief Scheme (Covid19TERS).
