The Member of the Executive council in the Gauteng Provincial Government (MEC) Faith Mazibuko says the owner of the Redbull butchery at Bara Taxi rank has been arrested for selling expired meat.
“The owner of the Redbull butchery, opposite the Bara Taxi Rank has been arrested for selling expired meat and sauces,” she said.
The MEC says they have been receiving complaints about non-compliance in many areas of Soweto and decided to take a walk in the area educating people about the importance of social distancing.
“We are in Soweto, with the Gauteng PC Lt. General Mawela. We have been receiving complaints of non-compliance in many areas of Soweto.
We started at the Bara Rank, educating commuters and taxi drivers about the importance of social distancing, wearing a mask and keeping hands clean,” she said.
MEC Mazibuko says that as they were taking a walk around the taxi rank, they were drawn by a smell coming from the butchery and decided to go inside and check.
“In the other fridge, there was cows heads and other types of meat mixed in the fridge, all of them were rotten,” she said.
Mazibuko has urged citizens to be careful when buying food products such as meat.
“We call upon our citizens to exercise caution when buying food products,” she said.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) Health Inspectors also closed the Usave shop, opposite the Bara Taxi Rank as it does not have a certificate of acceptance.
