Some reportedly fainted while waiting for the payments.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has taken the blame and apologised after thousands of beneficiaries went home empty handed.
This was caused by a technical problem in the sassa system.
“We apologise to those beneficiaries who’ve spent money who took their time out of their busy schedules at home to receive their payments but unfortunately when they got there, some of them they didn’t receive that money. So, we really apologise, we are really sorry about what has happened,” KZN Sassa spokesperson Sandy Godlwana told ENca.
However, it is still not yet known what might have caused the technical glitche.
“The only information that was shared with us is that there is a technical glitch. Which is what we’ve been communicating with our beneficiaries and we know that they are in control and would ensure that everything us one accordingly to ensure that atlas our beneficiaries get paid and indeed we received good news that the issue has been resolved,” Godlwana added.
Different payment points
Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said beneficiaries must make use of different paypoints to access their grants.
“There are multiple channels of payments where people can have access to their grants. They do not have to use one available method. People could have gone to the post office. These multiple channels are to ensure that people avoid flocking to one area at the same time,” he said
