On his Sunday evening address where he announced the easing lockdown to Level 3 from the 1st of June, President Ramaphosa said they have had talks about vaccines in South Africa amid Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Ramaphosa says they have asserted that should the vaccine be available, it should be free and equitable for all.
“We have argued that should a vaccine be developed anywhere in the world it should be made freely and equitably available to citizens of all countries,” Ramaphosa said.
Ramaphosa emphesized that Government is supporting and funding several research projects, including a plan to locally manufacture coronavirus vaccines as soon as candidates are available.
“Until there is a vaccine available to all, the coronavirus will continue to spread in our population. This means that we must get used to living with the coronavirus for some time to come.
“We will use the skills, expertise, infrastructure and organisations within the vaccines industry to produce and distribute the vaccine,” he added.
Meanwhile, the president has also announced that alcohol sales will be permitted on Lockdown Level 3, provided it is consumed at home.
Cigarette and tobacco products sales ban remain effective. See the summary of the Lockdown Level 3 regulations here.
