Young, vibrant, energetic, and beautiful are just a few words to describe musician Nomfundo Keys.
EBNewsDaily invited Nomfundo Keys for a chat following her successful single ‘Sthandwa Sam’. She has appeared on multiple television and radio programs because of her music.
We sent her a couple of questions and this is what she had to say:
Who is Nomfundo Keys?
Nomfundo Keys is a 22-year-old versatile female vocalist, performer, songwriter, and a natural-born star. Her real name is Nomfundo Mkhize, born and raised in Pietermaritzburg
Nomfundo Keys started singing at the age of 7 at church, attempted on releasing a gospel album year 2015, have worked with multiple local DJs and producers. She has released 3 singles ‘Sthandwa sam’ which is currently on tv and radio, ‘Ubuye’ and ‘Dear Diary’.
When and what influenced you to start a music career
After losing my mother in 2006, life changed completely. Writing poems and songs were my only escape from the pain.
A lot happened after that. I lost myself into depression for years and music was my only rescue. The year 2015 was my first time in studio.
I started recording and I never looked back. Dr. Rebecca malope was my inspiration since childhood and pursuing music I did it for my mother and to save me from myself.
Why the name Nomfundo Keys
Nomfundo Keys is more than just a stage name. At the age of 18 years, I went up and down, with ideas, talent. I had so much to offer, all I ever needed was a rescue, help, and development but I was hurt, broken instead, I was neglected, abused, and hopeless.
I grew from all that and decided to be the ‘Keys’ to my own happiness, success, and future. I decided to lock my past and unlock my future so I will be able to open doors for my healing and help others in the future.
Which genre is Nomfundo Keys in?
Well, I wouldn’t really specify because I’m just everywhere. I can sing anything but I believe I’m a Soul/Afropop/RnB type of a person
As an emerging artist, what are some of the challenges you meet?
Challenges are everywhere. The most common one is that some men don’t respect me as a woman. Handling and dealing with social media is the most difficult one; the harassment and so much more.
The entertainment industry is not as easy as it seems, some people take advantage as well because I’m young, nice, and humble. At times, the support is not there at all and that’s discouraging.
How did COVID-19 affect you as an emerging artist?
Covid-19, Uhm… it’s not easy. Things have changed, for the past few months, things have been really difficult with no money coming in to help my brand.
In SA, which artist do you dream to work with in the future?
In South Africa I would love to work with Vusi Nova.
Who are the pillars to Nomfundo Key’s brand?
My family and fans are the actual pillars of the Nomfundo Keys brand. I also have my assistants helping me out, Phiwe, Katleho, Nozipho and Lonwabo who is my producer. Without them, I cannot be Nomfundo Keys. I’m really grateful of everyone who supports my journey.
Future plans in your music career?
We are currently working on numerous projects. Soon I will be releasing a full album and a lot of music videos that will be televised.
After Covid-19, we are planning tours as well. What I can promise is that there’s a lot of wonderful music to be released. That doesn’t limit the fact that I am also getting into acting and might be on your screens soon.
