Beauty pageants aren’t for the faint-hearted, it requires more than just a pretty face. Dzunisani Floyd Chauke is more than just a tall, dark and handsome man. He tells us more about his journey in the beauty pageants industry.
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a qualified language practitioner from Tshwane University of Technology. I am currently studying towards my postgraduate qualification with the aforementioned institution. I am TUT’s Mr Personality 2020 and currently a runner-up for the Mr & Miss Tshwane Region beauty pageant.
What inspires your love for beauty pageants?
Having an extra shade of melanin (laughs). Black is everything and more these days. My love for fashion and looking neat at all times fuels my love for beauty pageants. How did you get into the beauty pageant industry?
So you’re TUT’s Mr Personality 2020, how did you feel when you were crowned?
My wish was to win Mr TUT Sosh 2020/2021 however being crowned Mr TUT Personality felt great. I was excited to be among the winners because that’s a sign of how hard work pays when combined with resilience. I am inspired and have seen how possible it is to survive at every challenge that comes your way. It also shows me that I can be anything I want to be and that that the world is my oyster.
What challenges do you come across in the beauty industry?
You need proper sponsorship in order to survive this industry. Apart from all the challenges that comes with beauty imperfections, sponsorship tops them all.
Have you always had love for the beauty industry?
Yes I always had passion for beauty pageants. I love modelling. I was only hesitant to get into the real industry because of fear of the unknown and thought maybe I wouldn’t fit in.
If there’s anything you could change about the beauty pageant industry, particularly for men, what would it be?
I wish beauty pageants could stop the swimwear round where men have to wear underwear only. (Laughs).
What’s your advice to that 15 year old boy/girl with passion for beauty pageants but have no clue on how to get into the industry?
To that young boy and girl out there with a passion for modelling and beauty pageants in general, go out there and do it. Take the first step and remember that fortune favours the brave. If I can do it then you can definitely do it. Do not let your background and upbringing stop you from doing what you love. Fight your fears and face the world. It is doable, keep faith and do what you love.
