She received 199 votes while Democratic Alliance nominee Annelie Lotriet received 82 votes.
Former minister of defence and military veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, is the new Speaker of the National Assembly.
A total of 298 MPs voted via secret ballot, with Mapisa-Nqakula receiving 199 votes versus the 82 secured by DA candidate Annelie Lotriet. There were a total of 17 spoilt votes.
Mapisa-Nqakula said she was willing to work with all parties represented in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the speaker is reportedly under investigation for corruption.
According to News24, she allegedly received a R5 million bribe from a defence contractor and blew R7 million on aircraft charters while living it up at luxury hotels. At that time she was minister of Defence and Military Veterans.
