Newly elected Johannesburg Mayor Jolidee Matongo has been a victim of attacks on social media for holding the Mayor’s office while his parents are from Zimbabwe. The #WeRejectMayorOfJHB trend picked up in most parts of Tuesday and Wednesday.
Meanwhile, it is established that Mayor Jolidee Matongo was born in South Africa, Soweto despite his parents were from Zimbabwean.
Matongo also made it clear during his sworn-in that he was born to Zimbabwean parents.
Former DA leader Mmusi Maimane came in defense of the new mayor, saying he is rightly a South African.
“Oksalayo [After all] Jodilee Matango is South African, Soweto born and we must not entertain xenophobia.
You can engage people on their ideas, on their track record of delivery as leaders, on their political choices.
But xenophobia, that’s not acceptable. Not today or any other day,” Mmusi tweeted
Former Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba made also stood with the #WeRejectMayorOfJHB trend saying Matango ‘will do nothing to fight corruption within his own ranks’.
“Service delivery will continue to worsen, and the people of Joburg will be put last as he & his cadres fight for one last supper before the elections,” Mashaba tweeted.
