Sizwe Nyambi, a big Jacob Zuma supporter and politician, is demanding R5 million in compensation from Police Minister Bheki Cele, national police commissioner Khehla Sitole and Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela for unlawful arrest.
Nyambi was arrested last week for attempting to transport Zuma support shirts from Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal. The shirts were written ‘Wenzeni uZuma’ (What has Zuma done?).
He was later released after spending two nights in jail and was not charged for anything.
However, his legal representatives argued in a letter that he was charged with “incitement to commit public violence”.
“Our client informs us that his arrest and detention was an abuse of power by members of the South African Police Service because he expressed his innocence from inception,” read the letter.
The letter also stated officers should have done preliminary investigations to determine if he was in any way implicated.
Duduzile Zuma who is known as “Dudu”, the daughter of convicted former president Jacob Zuma has been defending ever since he was arrested. She took to Twitter and wrote:
