Ireland appeared on course to pull off a shock upset away from home after John Egan’s opener but Ronaldo had the last laugh with two near-identical headers to seal all three points for the hosts, taking tally up to 111 goals from 180 games for his country.
The result saw Portugal go three points clear of nearest rival Serbia in Group A . Ireland, meanwhile are still yet to pick up a point three matches into their qualifying campaign and find themselves down in fourth place.
