The Economic Freedom Fighters are to lay criminal charges against the African National Congress after being blocked by its supporters in Pietermaritzburg. This incident took place on Sunday during Eff drive to mobilize voters for the upcoming November municipal elections.
The blocking of the Eff happened at Dambuza and Willowfontein townships and has prompted the Eff to lay charges against what seemed to be a tense stand-off which took place in atleast three voting stations.
Only at one voting station did the ANC members lock the gates to prevent the Eff from having access into the voting station.
CIC Julius Malema said that the elections could not be free and fair when the African National Congress is blocking other registered parties. According to the Eff leader, the unethical behavior by some members of the African National Congress jn KwaZulu-Natal will not go unpunished. He said he was going to report them to the Independent Electoral Commission of South Frica(IEC) for breaching the electoral rules.
“Yes, we will take this up with the Independent Electoral Commission, we will take this up with the IEC, definitely, “said Malema.
A human shield was formed by Eff members around Malema at Dambuza township in order to escort him to a different voting station. Members of the ruling party tried to break the shield during which a brief exchange of blows and insults were exchanged between the two sides.
After CIC Malema left for another station at Willowfontein, he was met again with another resistance where the gates were locked and blockaded.
ANC members told him to get lost.
Sibusiso Mkhize, ANC branch leader in the area accused the Eff of engaging in unethical conduct.
“The Eff was bringing people who do not reside in this ward to register to vote for their dodgy candidates. Our people were just trying to stop that,” said Sibusiso Mkhize.
