South Africa’s passport has risen in the latest Henley Passport Index for 2026, giving holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 100 destinations worldwide. The improvement reflects South Africa’s ongoing diplomatic engagement and the expansion of bilateral travel agreements with countries across multiple regions.
The Henley Passport Index, published quarterly by a London-based global citizenship and residency advisory firm, ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without obtaining a prior visa. South Africa’s movement up the rankings is a signal of growing international recognition of the country’s travel document and its citizens’ mobility.
For South African travellers, the expanded visa-free access translates into greater convenience and lower travel costs when visiting destinations in Africa, Asia, and parts of the Americas and Europe. The ability to travel without the burden of advance visa applications is particularly significant for business travellers and South Africans in the diaspora.
The improvement comes despite ongoing global challenges including tighter immigration controls in several major destination countries. South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation has pointed to active diplomatic efforts to negotiate new bilateral visa exemption agreements as a key driver of the improved ranking.
However, South Africa’s passport still lags significantly behind the world’s most powerful travel documents. Analysts note that addressing concerns around crime, governance and economic instability will be important for South Africa to continue climbing the index in future years.
