Mashatile recovering after minor surgery, Presidency says

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is recovering after a minor surgical procedure and remains in contact with his office, the Presidency said on Monday.

The update followed questions about Mashatile's health and his absence from some public engagements. His office said he became unwell at home in Johannesburg, received medical attention and was admitted for a minor procedure and observation.

He was later discharged and is continuing to receive medical care and rest, according to the statement.

The Presidency did not disclose the nature of the procedure. It said Mashatile's programme and official responsibilities were being managed during his recovery.

Official work continues remotely

Mashatile has participated in Parliament and other work-related meetings through virtual platforms while recuperating, his office said.

The statement added that he would resume his full programme of public engagements when advised to do so by his medical team.

His office asked the public and media to rely on official information about his health and said it would not comment on speculation. It also thanked those who had sent messages of support.

The Presidency issued a similar update earlier in August after announcing that Mashatile had undergone a minor procedure. Monday's statement was published after renewed public interest in his absence from engagements.

No date has been announced for his return to a full in-person schedule.
