Suspended Crime Intelligence deputy head Major-General Feroz Khan’s scheduled appearance before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday is uncertain after his reported readmission to hospital.
Khan was summoned to testify on 1 September, but the commission said his legal team could seek a postponement on medical grounds. SABC News and eNCA reported that he had been admitted to hospital again.
The commission’s subpoena remained in force ahead of the hearing. A postponement would require a formal application and a decision by the inquiry.
Khan was originally due to testify in July. He was shot and wounded in Houghton, Johannesburg, shortly before that appearance and was unable to take the stand.
In his absence, the commission has heard testimony and received documents containing allegations about interference in criminal investigations, government tenders and his dealings with other officials and businesspeople.
Those allegations have not been tested through Khan’s evidence and are not findings by the commission. Khan has not been convicted in relation to the claims aired at the inquiry.
The commission has reserved time for Khan to respond to the evidence. Whether that programme proceeds on Tuesday depends on his medical position and any ruling on a postponement request.
The Madlanga Commission is investigating allegations of corruption, political interference and criminal infiltration within South Africa’s law-enforcement system.
