The Madlanga Commission has questioned KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Lieutenant-Colonel Deenadayalan Govender about cash deposits totalling more than R3 million that entered his bank accounts between August 2022 and December 2023.
Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson put the figure of R3,050,574 to Govender during his evidence in Pretoria.
The commission said the amount was substantially higher than Govender’s monthly take-home pay. Govender was asked to explain the deposits and his relationships with tow-truck businessman Clive Naicker and convicted drug dealer Timmy Marimuthu.
Chaskalson said the commission would seek corroborating evidence and examine whether the movement of funds showed possible indicators of money laundering.
The questions and figures placed before Govender are part of the commission’s evidence-gathering process. They are not findings that he committed a crime.
Govender returned to the witness stand on Monday. The commission is examining allegations about criminality, political interference and corruption within parts of South Africa’s criminal justice system.
Any adverse conclusion would have to be based on the full record and contained in the commission’s formal findings. Govender’s evidence and responses remain subject to that process.
