Two accused in Zolani Tete murder case continue bail bid

Two men accused in connection with the killing of former boxing world champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete are expected to continue their bail application in the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

They are among four people arrested in the case. One of the two applicants, a 22-year-old wheelchair user, is alleged by the state to have planned the attack.

The accused face charges including murder and attempted murder. The attempted-murder count relates to a passenger who was with Tete when he was shot.

SABC News reported that the court previously declined an application to transfer the 22-year-old to a public health facility because of his medical condition.

The other two accused have abandoned their bail applications and are expected to return to court on 13 October.

Tete, a former IBF super-flyweight and WBO bantamweight world champion, was shot dead outside his Mdantsane home on 21 August. A woman who was in the vehicle with him was wounded.

Police announced four arrests days after the shooting. The current proceedings concern whether two of those accused should remain in custody while prosecutors prepare the case.

The bail hearing will not determine the merits of the charges. All four accused are presumed innocent unless convicted by a court, and the state's allegation about the planning of the killing has not yet been tested at trial.
