A Gauteng Legislature committee says murder, sexual offences and serious assault increased in the Honeydew policing precinct.

The Gauteng Legislature’s community safety committee has raised concern about violent-crime trends and policing capacity in the Honeydew precinct in Johannesburg.

The committee visited Honeydew police station during the past week and said the station was the worst-performing in Gauteng and fourth-worst nationally in the first-quarter 2026/27 crime statistics.

Committee chairperson Bandile Masuku said murder in the precinct increased by 11% compared with the same period in the previous financial year. Sexual offences rose by 22%, while assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm increased by 26%, according to the committee’s figures reported by SABC News.

The committee also received community reports about gangsterism and the involvement of some school-age boys in violent offences. Those accounts are allegations presented to the oversight team and do not establish the guilt of any individual.

Masuku said the committee plans to convene an imbizo to bring residents, police and other authorities together over the crime problems identified during the visit.

The oversight findings place attention on the resources, investigations and prevention work at Honeydew station. The precinct covers several suburbs in north-western Johannesburg and serves a large, growing population.

The percentages describe changes in recorded offences, not the outcome of court cases. The committee’s planned engagement is expected to examine both police performance and the concerns raised by residents.
