KZN acting premier says Reed Dance remains central to cultural heritage

KwaZulu-Natal acting premier Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa says the annual uMkhosi woMhlanga remains important to preserving the province’s cultural heritage and promoting unity.

She spoke at eMachobeni Royal Palace in Ngwavuma during the first ceremony of this year’s Reed Dance programme, SABC News reported.

KaMadlopha-Mthethwa paid tribute to the AmaZulu royal family for maintaining cultural traditions and bringing together people from different political and community backgrounds.

The Reed Dance is one of the best-known events on the AmaZulu cultural calendar. It brings participants, families, traditional leaders and guests to the royal residences for ceremonies built around the presentation of reeds, song and cultural observance.

This year’s programme is being held across two ceremonies. The second is scheduled for eMashobeni Royal Palace in uPhongolo next weekend.

The acting premier’s remarks came during Heritage Month, when public institutions and communities hold events focused on South Africa’s languages, traditions and cultural history.

Provincial authorities and organisers are expected to manage transport, security and public access around the second event. Any changes to the programme will be reported when confirmed by the royal household or provincial government.
