Anele Tembe inquest returns to Cape Town court
A five-day inquest into Anele Tembe’s death is expected to begin in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court after an earlier postponement.
The inquest into the death of Anele Tembe is expected to begin in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday, more than five years after she died.
Tembe, 22, died after falling from the tenth floor of a Cape Town hotel in April 2021.
The five-day inquiry is intended to establish the circumstances surrounding her death. It was postponed in July because the presiding magistrate was unavailable.
The National Prosecuting Authority previously decided not to prosecute after an investigation that did not produce a conclusive basis for criminal charges.
Tembe was engaged to rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes at the time of her death. Forbes denied involvement before he was killed in Durban in February 2023.
Tembe’s family disputed claims that she had suicidal tendencies. Those competing accounts have not been presented as findings by the court.
The inquest will hear evidence and consider the material placed before the magistrate. No conclusion has yet been reached about legal responsibility for Tembe’s death.
