Thriston Lawrence wins third European Masters title after play-off
South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence fired a final-round 62 before beating Paul Casey on the fourth sudden-death hole in Switzerland.
South African golfer Thriston Lawrence has won his third European Masters title after beating Paul Casey in a four-hole sudden-death play-off in Switzerland.
Lawrence began Sunday’s final round at Crans-Montana six shots behind overnight leader Casey.
The 29-year-old produced an eight-under-par 62 to close the gap and force his way into contention.
Casey carried a one-shot lead to the 18th hole but made bogey, leaving the pair level and sending the tournament into a play-off.
The first three extra holes failed to separate them. Lawrence then made birdie on the fourth play-off hole to secure the title.
The victory gives Lawrence a third win at the European Masters and completes a comeback after a difficult period in the world rankings.
He had climbed into the top 70 after his previous success in Switzerland before later falling to 183rd.
