SIU authorised to investigate R150 million North West road tender
President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised an SIU investigation into a R150 million North West road-construction tender.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the Special Investigating Unit to investigate a R150 million North West road-construction tender.
The investigation will focus on a contract awarded by the provincial Department of Public Works and Roads for work on a route through Setlagole and Delareyville.
The SIU said it would examine the procurement process, the contract and payments made under the tender. The unit will assess whether the process was fair, competitive, transparent, equitable and cost-effective, and whether it complied with legislation and Treasury and departmental rules.
SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho said the investigation would also look for improper or unlawful conduct by officials or other people involved in the transaction.
The proclamation authorises an investigation. It is not a finding that any person or company committed an offence, and the allegations under examination have not been proved.
The SIU can refer evidence of criminal conduct to the National Prosecuting Authority. It can also pursue civil recovery where an investigation establishes that public money was lost through unlawful conduct.
The road project serves communities in the Ngaka Modiri Molema and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district areas. Further details about the appointed contractor and the current status of the construction were not included in the information available on Tuesday afternoon.
