Danny Jordaan wins fourth term as SAFA president
Danny Jordaan received 157 votes to Sandile Zungu's 82 at SAFA's elective congress, securing another four-year term as president.
Danny Jordaan has been re-elected president of the South African Football Association, securing a fourth term after defeating businessman Sandile Zungu at SAFA's elective congress in Midrand on Saturday.
Jordaan received 157 votes to Zungu's 82, according to results reported from the congress. The victory gives the 75-year-old another four-year mandate and is expected to keep him in the position until 2030.
Jordaan first became SAFA president in 2013 and has led the association through three previous terms. Saturday's vote followed a closely watched contest after Zungu was cleared to stand by SAFA's Compliance Committee.
The ballot took place after four regional associations were suspended on the eve of the congress. Amajuba, Harry Gwala, Sarah Baartman and Pixley ka Seme did not take part, reducing the number of voting regions from 52 to 48.
The South African Masters and Legends Football Association's voting rights were also reported to have been suspended. Each eligible region held four votes, while the Premier Soccer League and SAFA associate members also formed part of the electoral college.
Representatives from FIFA, CAF, COSAFA and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee attended the congress. Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie was also present.
The result ends the immediate leadership contest at the national football body. Jordaan's new term begins as SAFA oversees Bafana Bafana, Banyana Banyana, youth national teams and the administration of the domestic game.
