Four stolen electric bicycles worth about R500,000 recovered in Gqeberha

Police in Gqeberha say four stolen electric bicycles valued at about R500,000 were recovered in Wells Estate hours after a residential burglary was reported.

Swartkops SAPS members followed up information about suspected stolen property at a house in Australia Street at about 19:05 on Thursday, 10 September.

Police said four black e-bicycles wrapped in black plastic were found in a room at the property.

The bicycles had been stored at a residence in Henry Gerber Crescent in Kamma Ridge on Wednesday evening. The burglary and theft were discovered at about 05:00 the following morning, according to the police statement.

Investigators linked the recovered bicycles to the Kabega Park policing area case.

No suspect was found at the Wells Estate property and no arrest had been made when SAPS issued its statement on Friday. The investigation is continuing.

Nelson Mandela Bay acting district commissioner Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo commended the officers for acting on the information and recovering the property within hours of the theft being reported.

The estimated R500,000 value was supplied by police. SAPS did not provide the make or individual value of the bicycles.

Police have not said whether forensic material was recovered at either property or whether the person responsible for the Wells Estate premises had been interviewed. The statement records the recovery but makes no finding about who committed the burglary.

The case remains an investigation into burglary and theft. Police said their next step was to identify and arrest those responsible.
