ActionSA targets Free State municipalities in election campaign
ActionSA has taken its local-election campaign to Welkom, saying jobs and municipal services will drive its Free State push.
ActionSA says it will target municipalities across the Free State in the 4 November local government elections, with employment and basic services at the centre of its campaign.
The party's deputy president, Mbahare Kekana, joined provincial leaders for a door-to-door campaign in Welkom on Sunday.
Kekana said ActionSA would ask voters for a mandate to run municipalities in the province. He pointed to potholes, illegal dumping, unemployment and weak service delivery as issues the party plans to campaign on.
The claims are part of ActionSA's election campaign and have not been independently assessed by EBNewsDaily.
Jobs and municipal services
Kekana said the party wanted municipalities to help revive closed or underused factories and create conditions for employment. He also said ActionSA would field mayoral candidates it believed could improve municipal administration.
The party has used its role in Tshwane's coalition government as part of its argument that it can take responsibility for local services. Kekana said it was prepared to work with other parties after the election.
The Free State campaign follows manifesto launches by several parties as the country moves closer to the municipal vote. Parties are competing for councils that will be responsible for water, sanitation, refuse collection, roads and other local services.
ActionSA did not announce its full list of Free State mayoral candidates during the Welkom campaign.
Voters will elect ward councillors and proportional-representation representatives when the local government elections take place on 4 November.
