Gauteng threatens licence action over alleged taxi intimidation and extortion
Gauteng says taxi operators found involved in intimidation, threats or extortion could face legal action against their operating licences.
Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela says operators found to be involved in intimidation, threats or extortion could face action against their operating licences.
The department said reports of alleged criminal conduct in the taxi industry had been referred to the Provincial Taxi Task Team.
Spokesperson Lesiba Mpya said the department would use applicable legal processes where wrongdoing involved an operating-licence holder. Any licence decision would follow the required process and no operator was identified in the statement.
The MEC urged associations and operators to resolve route disputes through established industry structures. She said intimidation and coercion could not be allowed to undermine public transport.
Gauteng's taxi industry carries a large share of daily commuters and route disputes can disrupt travel across the province. The latest statement did not announce arrests or identify a specific association.
