Griquas retained the Currie Cup after beating the Pumas 23-16 in a closely contested final in Kimberley.
The teams scored one try each in the opening half, with the Pumas taking a 13-10 lead into the break after adding an extra penalty.
Scoring remained tight in the second half. Further penalties left the teams level at 16-16 as the match entered its closing stages.
Griquas broke the deadlock with about five minutes remaining when their forwards forced their way over for a try. The conversion opened a seven-point lead that held until full time.
The victory gave the Kimberley side a second consecutive Currie Cup title. Griqualand West Rugby Union chief executive Arni van Rooyen praised the team’s determination and the home crowd’s support.
The final followed Griquas’ 52-12 semifinal win over the Lions a week earlier.
