Alexander Zverev beats Ben Shelton to win US Open title

Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton in four sets on Sunday to win the US Open men's singles title in New York.

The German won 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-2 to secure his second Grand Slam title and his first at Flushing Meadows.

Zverev took control by winning the opening set and then dominated the second-set tiebreak. Shelton forced the match into a fourth set, but Zverev broke clear to close out the final.

Second major of the season

The victory followed Zverev's French Open title earlier in 2026 and completed a two-major season.

Shelton had been attempting to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003.

The Associated Press reported that Zverev's stronger returning and steadier play proved decisive as the match progressed.

The result adds the US Open trophy to Zverev's major record after earlier near misses in New York.
