More than 20 schools across the North West were damaged by strong winds between Friday and Saturday, the provincial Education Department said on Monday.
The damage affected schools in all four districts: Ngaka Modiri Molema, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Bojanala and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati.
Department spokesperson Dr Elias Malindi said roofs were damaged and mobile classrooms were destroyed. The department did not immediately provide a final repair estimate.
Infrastructure teams are being sent to the affected schools to assess the damage and determine what temporary measures are needed to keep teaching and learning going.
The department said the latest damage would add pressure to an already strained school-infrastructure programme.
SABC News reported that four schools were affected in Ngaka Modiri Molema, 12 in Dr Kenneth Kaunda, four in Bojanala and six in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati. Those district figures amount to 26 schools, although the department described the overall total as more than 20.
No injuries were reported in the information released by the department. It had also not announced which schools would need to close while assessments were under way.
The department said its immediate focus was on alternative arrangements at schools where classrooms could not be used. Further details are expected after the infrastructure inspections.
