Bail ruling due for two accused in Zolani Tete murder case

The Mdantsane Magistrates' Court is expected to rule on Monday on bail applications by two men accused in the murder case of former boxing world champion Zolani Tete.

Uzozole Goqwana and Sinebongo Qase are among four men charged in connection with Tete's killing. The prosecution alleges that the two played key roles in the planning of the attack.

eNCA reported that the other two accused, who are alleged to have carried out the shooting, abandoned their bail applications.

Decision follows reserved judgment

The court reserved its decision after hearing evidence and argument in the bail proceedings. SABC News previously reported that judgment would be delivered after the State opposed the applications.

Tete, 38, was shot outside his home in Mdantsane on 21 August. A woman was also wounded during the attack.

The former International Boxing Federation super-flyweight champion was remembered at his funeral in Mdantsane for a career that took him from the Eastern Cape to world-title success.

Monday's ruling will deal only with whether Goqwana and Qase should be released while the criminal case continues. It will not determine guilt. All charges remain allegations, and the accused are presumed innocent unless convicted.
