The eThekwini Municipality has urged residents to take precautions following a Level 2 severe thunderstorm warning issued by the South African Weather Service effective from Sunday, 25 October, until Monday evening, 26 October 2026.
The forecasts indicated widespread and severe thunderstorms across the province, with the eThekwini region expected to be significantly affected.
Heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail are anticipated, posing a serious risk to life, property, and infrastructure.
The anticipated thunderstorms may result in flooding on roads, bridges, and low-lying areas. Poor visibility and slippery road surfaces are expected to make driving hazardous.
The municipality urged residents in flood-prone areas, particularly informal settlements, to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families.
“Motorists are advised to exercise caution, reduce speed, and maintain safe following distances on wet and slippery roads. Where possible, residents are encouraged to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel,” the municipality said.
The municipality said its Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert and ready to respond to incidents.
Residents have been advised to monitor the municipality’s official communication platforms for weather updates and further safety information.
The municipality has warned the public against attempting to cross swollen rivers or streams, particularly where water levels are above ankle height.
