Income from tourist accommodation in South Africa rose 7.6% in August 2026 compared with a year earlier, according to Statistics South Africa’s newly released industry survey.

The increase accompanied a 3.9% rise in stay-unit nights sold and a 3.6% increase in average income per stay-unit night. The figures are measured at current prices, so the income increase is not an inflation-adjusted growth rate.

Total income for the tourist accommodation industry rose 6.0% year-on-year. That broader measure is distinct from income earned specifically from accommodation.

Seasonally adjusted income also increased

Seasonally adjusted accommodation income increased by 0.6% from July to August, following a 3.6% increase in July. Accommodation income for the three months ending in August was 7.1% higher than in the corresponding period a year earlier.

Stats SA released the August findings on 27 October. The results describe the accommodation industry during that reference month, rather than current October conditions or the number of individual visitors.
